Capturing that split-second instance of a fast-moving meteor blazing across the night sky is an exhilarating experience for any photographer. Meteor showers offer a unique opportunity to blend the beauty of the night sky with the artistry of photography.


In this guide, we will delve into the technical aspects of photographing meteor showers using a digital camera. From selecting the right equipment to mastering camera settings and post-processing techniques, you'll be equipped to create stunning images of these spectacular events.

When is the best time to photograph a meteor shower?

The best time to photograph a meteor shower depends on several factors, including the shower's peak activity, the moon phase, and your local weather conditions.


Peak activity

Meteor showers have peak times when the highest number of meteors are visible per hour. It's generally best to photograph during these peak periods to maximize your chances of capturing impressive meteor streaks. Check reliable sources like astronomy websites or apps for the peak times of specific meteor showers.


Moon phase

The brightness of the moon can significantly affect your ability to see and photograph meteors. A bright moon can wash out fainter meteors, reducing the overall visibility of the shower. To minimize moon interference, aim to photograph meteor showers when the moon is in its crescent phase or when it has set for the night.


Local weather conditions

Clear skies are essential for successful meteor shower photography. Cloud cover can obscure the view of the night sky and prevent you from capturing clear images of meteors. Check the weather forecast for your location and plan to photograph the shower on a night with minimal cloud cover.


Radiant point

Choosing the right equipment

A digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) or mirrorless camera is ideal for astrophotography due to its ability to adjust settings manually and capture long exposures. Ensure your camera has manual mode and the capability to shoot in RAW format for optimal image quality and flexibility in post-processing.


Lenses

A wide-angle lens with a fast aperture (f/2.8 or wider) is recommended to capture as much of the night sky as possible and gather sufficient light. Popular choices include 14mm, 16mm, or 24mm lenses.


Tripods

Camera settings that work best for photographing meteors

Before you begin, switch your lens to manual focus and set it to infinity (∞) to ensure sharpness throughout the frame. Use live view and magnification to fine-tune focus on stars or distant objects.

It is a common misconception that you need to have a fast shutter to capture a fast-moving meteor. To maximise your chances you need to ensure your camera is very sensitive to light, this can be achieved by:

  • setting your lens to its widest aperture (for example f/2.8) to gather as much light as possible and maximize the visibility of faint meteors.

  • starting with a moderate ISO setting, such as ISO 800-1600, to capture enough light without introducing excessive noise. Adjust as needed based on your camera's performance and the brightness of the meteors.

  • using long exposures to capture the movement of meteors across the sky. Start with a shutter speed of 10-320 seconds, adjusting as necessary to balance exposure and minimise star trailing.


Shooting in raw allows you to get more data from your images in post-processing without degrading image quality.


Pointing the camera

Position your camera to capture as much of the night sky as possible, focusing on the radiant point of the meteor shower. Consult star maps or astronomy apps to determine the location of the radiant for the specific meteor shower you're photographing. Generally, the meteor shower is named after the constellation it is in in the night sky. Orient your camera towards this point/constellation and adjust the composition as needed to include interesting foreground elements.


Tracking mount vs. tripod

While a tripod is sufficient for capturing meteor showers, a tracking mount offers distinct advantages, including:

  • Longer exposures: With a tracking mount, you can take longer exposures without star trailing, allowing you to capture more meteors and fainter details in the night sky.

  • Improved sharpness: By compensating for the Earth's rotation, a tracking mount keeps stars and other celestial objects sharp throughout the exposure.

  • Increased flexibility: Tracking mounts allow you to experiment with different exposure times and compositions, giving you more control over your final images.


Post-processing techniques

Once you've captured your images, it's time to enhance them through post-processing. Here's a step-by-step guide to creating a composite image of a meteor shower using Photoshop:

  1. Import your images into Photoshop as layers.

  2. Use the Auto-Align Layers feature to ensure all images are perfectly aligned, especially if you're using a tracking mount. On the navigation bar, click on 'Edit' then scroll down to 'Auto-Align Layers'.

  3. Change the blending mode of each layer to 'Lighten' to blend the layers and reveal the brightest elements, like the meteors, in each frame.

  4. Create a layer mask for each image and use a soft brush to paint over areas where you don't want the meteor trails to appear. Remember - white reveals and black conceals.

  5. Adjust levels, curves, and colour balance to enhance the overall look of the composite image. Then export the image.


Photographing a meteor shower requires careful planning, the right equipment, and technical skills. By understanding these principles, you'll be well-equipped to capture stunning images of them.
